Trophies
Trophies with Dražen’s image were made for the basketball competitions McDonald’s Championship, Lipik 3×3 Challenger and Dražen Petrović Cup.
McDonald’s Championship (McDonald’s Open) was an international basketball competition in which NBA clubs played against the champion club teams of Europe, Australia and South America and exceptionally in the first two years against the club teams of Yugoslavia and USSR. It was organized as a tournament in one host city. The competition was held every year from 1987 to 1991 after which it was decided to be held every two years and in total there were nine in the period from 1987 to 1999. Interestingly, all editions of the tournament were won by NBA teams, although Italian Scavolini Pesaro and Spanish Montigalà Joventut were close to winning the title. From 1994 the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award had been named after Dražen Petrović and was won by his his Portland teammate Clyde Drexler, Michael Jordan and lastly Tim Duncan.
Od 19Since 1999 the International Street Basketball Tournament in Lipik has been organized under the name Streetball Lipik or Lipik 3×3 Challenger when it became a part of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour. The winner of the Lipik 3×3 Challenger gets awarded the prestigious Dražen Petrović trophy in memory of one of the greatest European and world basketball players of all time. With the approval and support of the Petrović family and the Museum and Memorial Center Dražen Petrović the Lipik 3×3 Challenger with pride awards this trophy since 2008. The trophy was made in Lipik Glas and it is made out of glass on which a basketball was formed by laser engraving in the middle of which is the figure of Dražen Petrović in Šibenka jersey leading a ball.
The third trophy was won by the winner of the Dražen Petrović Cup, a competition in which all clubs registered in Croatian Basketball Federation competed. According to the rules, the club that has collected more victories in three games between cadetes, juniors and senors wins the Cup. All selections of the club that won points during the season, depending on the success in the Croatian championship, participated in the competition. The two best clubs received invitations to play in the grand finale in September in which cadets, juniors and seniors competed for Dražen’s trophy. The award is made out of stone showing Dražen’s recognizable passing through his legs and a basketball on a wooden pedestal, the work of Tomislav Pavletić. The final of the first edition of the Dražen Petrović Cup was held on 23 September 2011. The competition was held a total of four times and due to the dissatisfaction of the Dražen Petrović Foundation with the organization of the tournament it was canceled in 2015. The last Cup was won by BC Cedevita.
